I'm so excited to be presenting a new project, The Living Collection, next Saturday, 12/1 at 8pm at Scholes St. Studio in Williamsburg.

"The living collection" is a phrase that was once used to describe the zoos, botanical gardens, and museums of the city. These places, made of tiny creatures and organisms, have inspired a sense of wonder and deep mystery in the way they collectively function to create a balanced ecosystem. The Living Collection aims to build an ecosystem of its own—one in which each member activates compositional material, learns to find a center within multiple relationships, and creates new forms and cycles as it unfolds.

The band will feature:

David Leon, flute/alto saxophone Yuma Uesaka, flute/tenor saxophone
Kalun Leung, trombone
Isaac Wilson, piano
Florian Herzog, bass
Lesley Mok, drums/compositions

Roman Filiu, alto saxophone/compositions
Kalia Vandever, trombone
Martin Nevin, bass
Lesley Mok, drums

I just finished up an exhilarating and rigorous year at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute completing my Master’s Degree! My theses includes two parts: Four Women, compositions based on my musical and historical research on Mary Lou Williams, Abbey Lincoln, Alice Coltrane, and Denise Levertov; and Artists Teaching Artists, a documentary I produced which features interviews with Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Terri Lyne Carrington, Joe Lovano, Ben Street, and Adam Cruz on their thoughts on jazz education today.

I had an amazing time performing at the Panama Jazz Festival with the Berklee Global Jazz Institute! In addition to performing two sets of Terri Lyne Carrington’s music, we held workshops for aspiring musicians in the community.
